Sharing the Holiday Spirit with Homeless Children

Heartland Center’s Drug Court alumni group in Springfield, Men Out Recovering Everyday (MORE) has been busy this holiday season. In November, the men gathered warm coats, blankets and clothing and passed them out to individuals and families living on the streets in downtown Springfield.

On December 20, the men handed out toys for homeless children at a special holiday event led by Santa himself. Rhonda Richards, Heartland Center Drug Court Coordinator, said the men collected more than $600 to buy toys for the children and received more than double that amount in donations. The group also had warm coats, gloves and hats for children in need. To learn more about this event, read news stories in the Springfield News-Leader and on KOLR 10.

After the holidays, MORE also plans to start volunteering as mentors to children at risk in a “Big Brother” type relationship. Richards says she is extremely proud of the men – they’re giving back to the community and succeeding in recovery!
